Going In Depth on Tiles
In the past 10-15 years tile has really taken off. We now have tile that imitates the look of wood, marble, stone, concrete, metallic, even fabric, and more. Current natural wood looks are pretty much the most popular thing on the tile flooring market. Up-to-date industrial looks are very chic and create a cool sophisticated style. Tile backsplashes and tile showers are a common choice for improving home decor.
Tiles can be placed almost anywhere in your home, outdoors on your property, or in a commercial setting. Locations for tile placement include floors, walls, ceilings, stairways, countertops, backsplashes, vanity tops, showers, bathtubs, patios and pools. Anywhere you want to create a classier, elegant, modern, weatherproof, or durable space; think tiles. We can even place tile on roof decks, fireplaces, wine cellars, windowsills, saddle thresholds, tables, and mosaic murals as well. There’s nothing like a beautiful mosaic tile mural in your foyer or place of business.
You may be asking, why is tile a better material for floors and walls than other materials? For one thing tiles are odorless and bacteria do not grow easily on them. Tiles are also long lasting, durable, and easy to install. Ceramic and Stone Tiling handles daily wear and tear without aging, while wood, laminate and carpets age much faster. Also if a tile happens to chip or break it can be replaced, as opposed to replacing the entire floor.
Tile works well in areas that support lots of foot traffic and dirt or spills. Using tile in a bathroom or kitchen is ideal because tile will not be damaged from fallen water. Because there are so many sizes, shapes and colors of tile you can design an original, custom, unique look. Whatever look you’re going for, you can achieve it with tile. These days we can even install tile without grout lines to give the appearance of real wood flooring. Another advantage to using tiles is that electric heating can be applied beneath the tile to create a heated floor that is ideal for cold weather living.
There are many different forms of tile including Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass, Metal, and Blended Tiles. Then there are Natural Stone Tiles which includes Marble, Granite, Travertine, Slate, Onyx, Quartzite, Sandstone and Limestone. Be sure to check out our 'Selecting a Tile' page to learn more about the characteristics of these different forms of tile.
tile shapes and patterns
Tiles can be cut to many different shapes, sizes and colors depending on your wants and needs. Tiles can also be laid or installed in different patterns to create the feel and look that you want. Some shapes and patterns include wide plank, square, rectangular, triangular, hexagonal, octagonal, diamond, herringbone, half-offset, straight-stacked, parquet, subway, bubbles, penny rounds, craftsman squares, modern mosaic, paseo, Moroccan fish scale, ogee, ogee-drop Moroccan, ogee drop straight set, picket, kite, star and cross, chain homme, trim, bull-nose, arabesque, fan, leaf, wave, colonial, petite colonial, chevron, geometric, checkered, mixed width and many more.
The most common shape selection when choosing a tile tends to be square. Tile sizes tend to start at 2” and proceed to 3”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 12”, 16”, 18”, and 24”, 36” and 48” sizes.
No longer are square tiles the only option. Elongated planks of tile can come in sizes of 6"-8" wide and 24"-48" long. 6” x 24” plank tiles stacked on each other is a fashionable, one-off design. The available size of tiles is growing and growing. 12” x 24 “ tiles are widely used and have even become more popular than 12” x 12” tiles. There are tiles as big as 48” x 48". Glass tiles come in sizes as big as 24" x 24".
With so many different options for material, design, color, size, and arrangement, the possibilities are endless.
